Thanksgiving Fun!

Written by

Gobble, Gobble and Happy Thanksgiving!  November is a time for homecoming and historically Thanksgiving is one of the most travel heavy times of the year.  According to various websites 56% of modern day Thanksgiving Pilgrims will travel at least 100 miles by car, with the average distance of 214 miles, but Orbitz, the travel website, has air travel at its peak in July. So armed with this information, the moral of this story is that all travel can be a hassle no matter what day you travel, it just depends on who you ask!

I am blessed with the fact that all my family now lives nearby and my even more special family of friends are right in my neighborhood.  The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is a huge night for us to get together and enjoy some quiet time before the hectic holidays hit.  This year we will be at Bear Creek together for the Pub Crawl.  What a great way to host a party…let Bear Creek do all the work!

We will begin the night in the Trails End Café where Victoria and Ben are the Mixologists for the night.  Bar None Entertainment will be spinning tunes and handing out prizes for trivia.  Then we will crawl on down to The Turkey Bar that will be set up in the rock garden with patio heaters and fire pits to keep us toasty and warm.  But it is the cool games that I am most looking forward to at The Turkey Bar.  There will be four of them all based on Minute to Win It games but with a Thanksgiving twist.

When it is time to move on to the third bar we will be heading into The Grille for a drink special and to listen to Jake Kaligis and The New Constitution play.  By crawling through the resort and visiting all three bars, I can then be entered to win an off peak season pass OR an overnight stay in The Hotel at Bear Creek.  What an awesome prize!!!

So on Monday of Thanksgiving week I can say that I am so looking forward to this Wednesday night and spending a fun night at Bear Creek with all my friends.  Hope to see you at the Turkey Bar.

For The Love of Fall

Written by

I LOVE the fall, it happens to be my second favorite season. (Behind winter, of course.) One of the best parts of the fall is my drive to and from the resort each day. The combination of the crisp air and the gorgeous foliage surrounding the resort is astounding. Aside from the nature aspect of fall, my second favorite thing about this season is the anticipation and excitement it brings about the coming winter months.  This is the time where I get to start talking about winter to the community and to our guests. We also start to see our seasonal team members returning, people who I might not have seen for several months. It’s almost like a fun family reunion!

You might be wondering what’s new at the resort this season. Well.. you’ve got questions, and I’ve got answers. We are opening a new coffee, breakfast, snack shop that will be called Bear Bites! Bear Bites will be open from 7am to 9pm daily and is located adjacent to the Mountain Eatery. Stop in for a latte, coffee, breakfast burrito or dessert waffle!

On the mountain, we continue to upgrade our snowmaking system. We installed 33 new automated snowguns. Automated guns allow more precise snowmaking and create a better product. These particular guns are designed to work better in marginal weather conditions. With the addition of these automated guns, this puts our automatic gun count at about 75%.

On another note, don’t forget that early bird season pass rates expire on October 31, that’s just 13 days! These are the best pass prices of the year, make sure you don’t miss out.

Fall Has Arrived

Written by

It’s been quite some time since our last post, things have gotten pretty hectic in our office. Since we’ve last chatted, we hosted a great Spanish Wine & Tapas dinner and an awesomely successful Oktoberfest.

In an effort to create more event awareness, we did somethings a little different with our social media for this event. Instead of just promoting the event prior to the actual festival, we did live postings throughout the event using the tag #BCOKTOBERFEST. In order to let our guests know what we were doing, we asked them to join the conversation on facebook, twitter, pinterest and instagram. You might be asking how we our guests knew that we wanted them to post to these outlets. If you are, below is a photo of flyers that we made and distributed throughout the event.

I'm not sure how many people actually used the QR codes but I did notice increased traffic to our pages in both likes, posts and photos throughout the day. I am deeming this effort a success, it allowed me to tell the story of the event through photos and posts, and I had a great time too. So, if your planning to attend this weekend's Fall Festival or the Harvest Wine Festival on October 21, keep an eye out for more social flyers and the other eye on our social pages. If you're luck you might even find me wandering around the event posting, tweeting, pinning or taking photos! PS- If you plan to attend Fall Festival, post on our pages using #BCFALLFEST

Before I go, here are a few things you should know:

See you soon!

Spanish Wines & Tapas Dinner 9/19

Written by

As an event planner at Bear Creek Mountain Resort, I have a grueling and demanding position….my life is not all games, music, festivals and wine… oh wait it is!!!!  The Special Events department at Bear Creek is tasked with creating exciting events both on the large scale think Spring Wine Festival or Oktoberfest and on the smaller scale like our Valentines Lift of Love and Dog Dayz of Summer.  Having access to a wonderful executive chef, Michael Greenstein, and our beautiful restaurant, The Grillle, we decided to put together an intimate Wine Dinner that incorporates wine education, tantalizing foods and place it all in our beautiful base area as it begins to explode with fall colors.

For the September 19th Spanish Wine & Tapas Dinner we began our brainstorming with our executive Chef and gave him the objective of coming up with some delightful tapas dishes that would use the regional foods of Spain for his plate inspirations.  Chef Michael loves to try new and exciting flavors and he came back with an intriguing menu that has everything from olives and anchovies, to octopus and manchego stuffed dates, wow!  Once we had our menu created it was now time to find the perfect wines to pair with each course.  Enter our wine expert Terry Balent from Southern Wine and Spirits.  Terry has over 30 years of experience in the industry and is such a wealth of information as well as a fun guy.  We presented Terry with our menu and he began to pull wines for us to taste.

Here is where my job becomes grueling, a select team of event planners, marketing and restaurant staff sit down with Terry and get an intensive education on the regional wines of Spain.  Terry had several wines on his suggested list for us to sample.  Spending time with Terry is like a master’s class in wine, way more than I can take in, but I love to listen to him describe the grapes (Tempranillo is the most widely planted grape in Spain), to joking about the Paco Y Lola label (they are the most common names in Spain like John and Mary is here), to his explanation about the differences between American and European barrels (machine cut vs hand sawn, who knew!).  From these wines we then decide which wines will go best with each course and what wines that we think the guest would enjoy tasting as well as learning about.  Our goal is to create a well-rounded night and to give each guest a wealth of taste sensations as well as knowledge that will help them understand the wine flavor notes, why it goes well with each food and how to recapture the enjoyment with their own wine choices.

I have to say that I was very impressed with the wines of Spain and can’t wait for our guests’ to have the full experience of tasting the wines with the foods and to compare each tapas with the different wines.  The fact that Terry will be there as a guide for the night will leave everyone with plenty of information and a night spent relaxing and enjoying life to its fullest.  We hope that you enjoy the experience we have created just for you.  Salud!

~Tracy
